At this year's FIfF e.V. (Forum InformatikerInnen für Frieden und gesellschaftliche Verantwortung) conference, researchers from the PEASEC group at TU Darmstadt will be honoured twice with the Weizenbaum Study Prize 2024. The doctoral theses of Dr. Thea Riebe and Dr. Thomas Reinhold, supervised by Professor Christian Reuter, will be honoured with the first prize. Both theses deal with security-relevant aspects of information and communication technologies and cyber security.

In her dissertation ‘Technology Assessment of Dual-Use ICTs – How to Assess Diffusion, Governance and Design’, Dr. Thea Riebe analyses how dual-use technologies can be used for both civilian and military purposes. She develops methods for assessing the diffusion, governance and design of such technologies, with case studies on autonomous weapons systems and artificial intelligence. In his work ‘Towards a Peaceful Development of Cyberspace: Challenges and Technical Measures for the De-Escalation of State-Led Cyberconflicts and Arms Control of Cyberweapons’, Dr. Thomas Reinhold focusses on the de-escalation of state-led cyberconflicts. It develops approaches to classify cyber weapons and analyses technical measures to reduce escalation risks. The award ceremony will take place on 26 October 2024 in Bremerhaven as part of the FIfF conference.

PEASEC – Science and Technology for Peace and Security’, headed by Professor Reuter, combines computer science with peace and security research and develops innovative approaches in the fields of cyber security, human-computer interaction and conflict research.
