Short Bio

Sándor Varró is a scientific adviser at the Wigner Research Centre for Physics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in Budapest. In the field of nonlinear laser-matter interactions and in theoretical quantum optics he has made seminal contributions to many important realms of physics ranging from electrons in strong fields, high-harmonic generation and attosecond physics, via phase-space distributions and Wigner functions, quantum statistics of single surface plasmons, to a novel description of quantum noise and black-body radiation. His results on the quantum phase properties of squeezed states are widely recognized.

Prof. Varró has published more than hundred scientific papers in high-ranked international journals, and authors many book chapters. As a guest scientist he has worked at several research sites in Europe and in the USA, he had a stay of two years as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Garching, Germany. He received the Schmid Award of the Eötvös Lóránd Physical Society and the Jánossy Award in Hungary. Prof. Varró is a member of the Committee of Laser Physics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and of the European Physical Society.
